CHISHOLM CATHOLIC COLLEGE

Chisholm Catholic College is a co-educational secondary college, located in Logan City, which is located 30 minutes south of Brisbane and 30 minutes north of the Gold Coast. It has an enrolment of 600 students and is operating in its 16th year.

The Responsible Thinking Process was first introduced at Chisholm Catholic College in Semester 2, 2002. The Responsible Thinking Classroom opened with Mrs Sue Martin, the RTC Teacher Aide and a variety of Pastoral Coordinators to work with the students. Subsequently, the RTC has been staffed with one predominant teacher and one or two others to help out during periods of teacher release. The current RTC teachers are Ms Miranda Pugsley and Mr Markus Ebeling. Mrs Catherine Thompson is the RTP Administrator and has been since its inception.

A Core Team of staff meet every three weeks and this group consists of the RTP Administrator, the RTC teachers, RTC teacher aide, two pastoral coordinators and the college counsellor. The College Counsellor, Mrs Michelle Rowbotham, is our intervention specialist who takes responsibility for tracking students who require extra support.

Contact can be made with Mr Markus Ebeling: mebeling@bne.catholic.edu.au or Ms Miranda Pugsley: mpugsley@bne.catholic.edu.au for information about our RTC or to arrange a visit.

EMMAUS COLLEGE

Emmaus College is a co-educational Catholic college located in North Rockhampton that has been using RTP for four and a half years. Emmaus College believes there are three important facets to educating a child. There is an academic or curriculum focus, there is a pastoral focus and there is a spiritual focus. All of which are equally important to the individual.

We see RTP as a vital tool in helping promote respect among our students and staff.

We see RTP as a vital tool in helping promote internally motivated behaviour within our students and staff. We have found it has enabled classroom disruptions to be dealt with quickly and quietly while maintaining the dignity of the individual and the integrity of the learning environment. It enables students and teachers time to reflect on their actions and look within themselves to decide if what they are doing is getting them what they want. Over the 4 years our data suggests about 65% of the school population never use the planning room and a further 25% will use it between 1 and 10 times before they work out how to work within the parameters of the school. A further 5% seem to take between 10 and 30 times and the remaining 5% tend to require more intensive work such as interventions, counseling sessions and sometimes home referrals.

The school has a population of approximately 1200 students split between a senior campus and a junior campus. Although we are a two campus school, because of the close proximity of the two campuses we run only one Planning Room (PR) which is based on the junior campus. We do not call the room the RTC. The Planning room is run by an RTP coordinator and a PR administration assistant. The Planning Room is also supervised by the administration team and year level coordinators when the RTP coordinator is unavailable. This was a deliberate decision made to ensure the process did not become reliant on one or two staff to ensure its longevity. The Deputy Principal of the senior campus is the RTP administrator and together with the RTP coordinator they ensure the process is running as close to the ideals of Ed Ford and George Venetis as possible and ongoing staff training and induction is completed in a timely manner. The RTP coordinator chairs a core team that meets weekly and is made up of the deputy principals, school counselors and the PR teachers. This meeting is used to discuss ongoing issues and concerns that may arise throughout the term. Once a month an extended core team meets, which includes teaching representatives and non teaching representatives, to discuss the future plans and goals of RTP in the school.

MERCY COLLEGE, MACKAY

We are currently in the "preparation stage" for RTP. The staff has had in-services both with, Ed Ford and George Venetis, and with those on staff who have done the intensive training namely Jim Ford and John Evans.

We are currently preparing the documentation to support the Process. Fortunately, Jim has been able to acquire copies of the "Whole Kit and Caboodle" from his previous school. We now have to "Mercify" them all. We have 15 people on staff who have volunteered to be part of the working committee. These have all started on the process of changing these documents.

Our plan is to introduce RTP from the start of next year. At this stage, it is intended that we use a classroom closest to the House Coordinators office as the RTC. An RTC teacher position will be filled. This person will be in the RTC for 3 lines and the House Coordinators and Deputy Principal will fill in the other 4 lines. There will be a full time teacher aide.

All staff seem to be keen about the introduction of the process.

In 2002 Responsible Thinking Process was introduced as the College's discipline programme. Initially Years 4 - 12 were involved, then in 2007 the programme was expanded to include Prep - Year 3. Due to the growth of the programme a second RTC was introduced this year.

Both RTC rooms are operated by teachers who have completed the five-day intensive in service with Ed Ford and George Venetis.

The RTC teachers are Lynda Barnes (responsible for Years 10 - 12) and Steven Lowther (responsible for Years Prep - Year 8).

SCHOOL INFORMATION

Walkervale State School was officially opened in 1955 and services the suburbs of Walkervale, Avenell Heights and Kepnock. These catchment areas constitute 59% of total school enrolments.

ENROLMENTS
The 2007 School Year commenced with 22 Primary Class Groups, 548 primary students enrolled and 2 Prep Class Groups totalling 52 students.

THE RESPONSIBLE THINKING PROCESS
Walkervale has been involved in the RTP since 1998. Mark Craswell, Deputy Principal, is the RTP administrator and Donna Watton (teacher) is the RTC teacher.
The RTC is staffed from 8am to 3.30pm. To achieve this, teachers at Walkervale agreed to use their Curriculum Coordination Time funding and to take care of curriculum co-ordination out of school hours. Using this time, the school has employed a teacher (Donna Watton) to staff the room four days a week and the Deputy Principal (Mark Craswell) works in the RTC in the remaining time.

Walkervale is moving towards accreditation. To aid in the achievement of this, we have an RTP committee (teachers representing each year level), which meets to resolve raised intra-school issues and work through the accreditation booklet.

Please contact Mark Craswell: mcras2@eq.edu.au or Donna Watton: dwatt31@eq.edu.au

WARNING: Some are teaching RTP but are neither accredited or qualified.

Both in the U.S. and in other countries, there are some educators teaching RTP
and some schools claiming to use RTP, that are not accredited by RTP, Inc.

Also, if a person were to give a presentation on RTP without permission,
they would be in violation of the Lanham Act.
